Felix Bernstein & Gabe Rubin
Felix Bernstein (1992, New York, NY) and Gabe Rubin (born 1992, New York, NY) are artists working with film, sculpture and musical performance. They stage scenarios featuring characters in dialectical tension with each other’s fantasies and reanimate occluded and bizarre tropes from queer history. The two artists have collaborated since meeting in 2010 at Bard College. In their melodramatic film Madame de Void (2018), they played drag variations of Cruella de Vil and her Dalmatian in a sadomasochistic romance. Bernstein and Rubin’s work has been presented at Luma Westbau, the Kitchen, MOCA Los Angeles, Issue Project Room, Anthology Film Archives, Artists Space, the Drawing Center, the Whitney Museum of American Art, Reena Spaulings Fine Arts, David Lewis, and Pilar Corrias Gallery. At the Whitney, they staged and performed Bernstein’s libretto Bieber Bathos Elegy in 2016 and Mayo Thompson’s Victorine (with Art & Language) for the 2012 Whitney Biennial. Their multimedia installation Vomitorium was presented at The Kitchen (New York) and LUMA Westbau in 2020. Their films have screened at the Brooklyn Film Festival, Casino Luxembourg, Cinema le Brady (Paris), Bologna (Amsterdam), and Anorak (Berlin). They edited the artist’s magazine Public Domain for Apogee press in Fall 2022.
